The real place has little to do with the vampire stories. For more than 800 years, this was a meeting point of cultures. German-speaking settlers known as the Saxons arrived here in the 12th and 13th centuries, invited by the Hungarian crown to farm the land and defend the frontier. Alongside them lived Hungarians, Romanians, and Roma communities, each leaving a mark on the food, language, and buildings.
What makes Transylvania different is how much of that layered past survives in daily use. These are not ruins behind rope barriers. People still live inside the walled citadel of Sighișoara, still worship in Saxon churches, and still farm the hills around villages that look much as they did 200 years ago. The region avoided the heavy redevelopment seen elsewhere in Europe, partly because of its remoteness and partly because history moved slowly here. The result is a landscape of cobbled squares, painted houses, and hillsides dotted with sheep.
