The Canadian Rockies run down the western side of Alberta and into eastern British Columbia. They form part of a mountain chain that stretches from the far north of Canada down to the deserts of the American southwest. What sets this section apart is the way the peaks, glaciers, and lakes sit so close together. You can stand beside a still, turquoise lake in the morning and touch the edge of an ancient glacier by mid-afternoon. Four national parks — Banff, Jasper, Yoho, and Kootenay — connect here, and together with three provincial parks they form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The colour of the water is the first thing most visitors notice. Many of the lakes glow a bright blue-green in summer. This is not a trick of the light. As glaciers grind against the rock beneath them, they create a fine powder known as rock flour. This powder washes into the lakes and hangs in the water, scattering the light and giving the lakes their famous colour. The effect is strongest from June to September, when the glaciers are melting and the powder is at its thickest.

This is a region that rewards a slower pace, though the distances are large and the roads are long. Rushing here means spending your days behind the wheel and missing the quiet corners. The route below is built for travellers who would rather see five places well than ten places badly. It suits couples, walkers, photographers, and anyone drawn to big landscapes and real silence.
