The three Baltic states — Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania — sit along the eastern edge of the Baltic Sea, between Poland and the Gulf of Finland. They are small countries, and you can travel the length of all three by road in a single long day. But that would miss the point. This is a part of Europe that has spent centuries under the rule of others — Danish, German, Swedish, Polish, and Soviet — and has held on to its own languages, faiths, and traditions through all of it. The result is a region where the past is close to the surface and easy to reach.

What makes the Baltics different from more familiar corners of Europe is the balance between grandeur and calm. The old towns of Tallinn, Riga, and Vilnius are among the best preserved in Europe, yet they rarely feel crowded. You can stand in a medieval square in the early morning and hear little more than church bells and footsteps. Prices are lower than in Western Europe, distances are short, and the people are used to visitors without being defined by them. It is a place built for travellers who prefer to look closely rather than tick off a long list.

This route suits anyone who values history, architecture, and quiet time in equal measure. It moves from north to south, from the Gothic spires of Estonia to the baroque churches of Lithuania, with forests, coastline, and a remarkable hilltop shrine along the way. You do not need to rush it, and you will get more from it if you do not.
