Most visitors to New York City treat Staten Island like a punchline. They board the ferry, photograph the Manhattan skyline, and turn straight back. That is one of the biggest mistakes you can make in New York. There are extraordinary things to do on Staten Island that almost no tourists bother to discover — from a living history museum that dates to 1695, to 2,800 acres of urban forest, a world-class botanical garden, and some of the finest pizza you will eat anywhere in the five boroughs.

Georgia’s Wild Caucasus

Georgia sits at the meeting point of Europe and Asia, in the southern folds of the Caucasus Mountains between the Black Sea and the peaks that mark the border with Russia. It is a small country, roughly the size of Ireland, but it holds a great deal within its borders: high alpine valleys, subtropical coast, ancient churches cut from stone, and one of the oldest living wine traditions on Earth. People have made wine here for around 8,000 years, and they still do it much as their ancestors did, in clay vessels buried in the ground.

Norway’s Western Fjords

Western Norway sits along the country’s Atlantic edge, where a coastline of islands, inlets, and long sea-arms reaches far inland between high mountains. These sea-arms are the fjords: deep channels carved by glaciers over many thousands of years, then filled by the sea when the ice retreated. The result is a landscape of steep rock walls, waterfalls, and small farms set on narrow shelves of green. On this day in space! Oct. 3, 1942: 1st successful launch of Germany’s V-2 rocket lays foundation for the space age

This missile was officially named Aggregat 4 (A4) but is more commonly known as the V-2. The V-2 was designed by the famous German rocket scientist Wernher von Braun, and it proved to be a deadly weapon during World War II.

U.S. Space Force confirms mystery break up of Cold War-era “spy satellite”

The USA 32 satellite split apart while traveling in a low-Earth orbit at around 9:13 p.m. UTC (4:13 p.m. EDT) on September 13, a spokesperson for the U.S. Space Forces–Space (S4S), told Newsweek in a statement.
