Madeira beyond the Coast

Madeira sits in the Atlantic Ocean about 900 kilometres south-west of mainland Portugal and closer to the coast of North Africa than to Lisbon. It is a volcanic island, formed by eruptions over millions of years, and its landscape still shows that origin. Steep ridges fall towards the sea, deep valleys cut through the interior, and the highest peaks rise above 1,800 metres. The island has belonged to Portugal since the early fifteenth century, when Portuguese sailors began to settle it, plant sugar cane, and later grow the vines that made Madeira wine famous across Europe.
