Santorini The Island of the Volcano

Santorini, known in ancient times as Thera, is one of the most famous islands in the world. It owes this to its active volcano, in whose caldera you can stay, enjoy exceptional local products, and have a drink or coffee while taking in an unparalleled view. Santorini is located at the southernmost point of the Cyclades and comprises a complex of islands: Thera, Thirasia, Aspronisi, Palea Kameni and Nea Kameni. Behind its current image lies a fascinating geological history: successive major explosive phases over hundreds of thousands of years shaped the characteristic caldera, collapsing and rebirthing the island time and again.

The Morocco Road: From the imperial cities to the desert’s edge

Morocco sits at the north-western corner of Africa, close enough to Europe that on a clear day you can see the coast of Spain from Tangier, yet different in almost every way that matters. It is a country of layers. Berber communities have lived here for thousands of years. Arab dynasties, Andalusian refugees, French and Spanish administrators, and generations of traders on the caravan routes have all left their mark. The result is a place where a single afternoon can carry you past a twelfth-century mosque, a covered market selling saffron and leather, and a mountain village where the pace of life has barely changed in a century.

The Fira-to-Oia hike is Santorini’s best walk and my favorite activity on the island. The route follows the caldera rim through Fira, Firostefani, and Imerovigli before crossing a rugged, exposed trail to Oia

Perched atop incredible volcanic cliffs and surrounded by the deep blue Aegean Sea, Santorini is one of Greece’s most iconic destinations.

The Baltic Capitals Route: from Tallinn to Vilnius

The three Baltic states — Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania — sit along the eastern edge of the Baltic Sea, between Poland and the Gulf of Finland. They are small countries, and you can travel the length of all three by road in a single long day. But that would miss the point. This is a part of Europe that has spent centuries under the rule of others — Danish, German, Swedish, Polish, and Soviet — and has held on to its own languages, faiths, and traditions through all of it. The result is a region where the past is close to the surface and easy to reach.
