Slovenia sits at the meeting point of four worlds. To its north and west are the Alps and Italy. To the south is the Adriatic and the Balkans. To the east is the flat plain that runs towards Hungary. The country is small, about the size of Wales, yet it holds glacier-fed lakes, limestone gorges, vineyards, and a capital city built along a river. For a traveller who prefers depth over distance, this combination is rare. You can stand among high peaks in the morning and walk a city embankment by evening, all without a long drive.

The Julian Alps form the heart of the country’s north-west. They are named after Julius Caesar, who founded the Roman town of Forum Iulii nearby. Today much of this range sits inside Triglav National Park, Slovenia’s only national park, named after Mount Triglav, the highest peak at 2,864 metres. The park protects forests, alpine meadows, and two of the most photographed lakes in Europe. Because Slovenia only became independent in 1991, much of this landscape stayed quiet while other parts of Europe filled with crowds. That quiet is part of its appeal.

This route suits travellers who like to settle in, walk a little each day, and eat well in the evening. Distances are short. The roads are good. English is widely spoken, and the pace is gentle. You do not need to rush, and the country does not ask you to.
