The Most ‘Over-Touristed’ Cities in Europe
In Anna Fleck's article "The Most ‘Over-Touristed’ Cities in Europe," she highlights the impact of overtourism on popular city-break destinations in Europe.
With the travel industry rebounding after the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, certain cities are experiencing an overwhelming influx of tourists. The picturesque town of Hallstatt in Austria has garnered attention for implementing measures to control the tourist influx, such as limiting the number of visitors and preventing them from taking selfies.
Holidu, a vacation home rental agency, compiled a ranking based on 2019 annual tourism figures, estimating the number of tourists per local resident to identify the most over-touristed cities.
Topping the list is Dubrovnik, Croatia, with 36 tourists for every local resident, particularly busy during July and August. Venice, Italy, Bruges, Belgium, and Rhodes, Greece, all share second place with 21 tourists per inhabitant.
Venice's overtourism is partly attributed to cruise ships, leading to a ban on liners from the city center since August 2021.
The article also mentions Dublin, Ireland, with 11 tourists per inhabitant, and Tallinn, Estonia, with 10 tourists per inhabitant, rounding off the top 10.
In comparison, larger cities like London ranked 29th out of the 35 cities analyzed, with a population of nearly 9 million people.
Holidu's shortlist of 35 cities was based on The Savvy Backpacker and Air Mundo’s most visited cities list, shedding light on the pressing issue of overtourism in some of Europe's most popular destinations.
